Zwei mal Langstrecke im Flieger erschlägt einen, der folgende Jetleg auch. Wenn die lange Reise nicht wäre, wäre ich öfter da. Insbesondere die viele Inseln im Pazifik locken. Nach der Enttäuschung von Fiji hat die Polynesia Reise mit Samoa und Tonga vieles entschädigt. Und der nächste Trip nach Frz. Polynesia und Cooks war auch klasse. Ganz oben auf meiner Liste steht Papua Neu Guinea und die benachbarten Inselreiche.

Two times long distance flights beat you down, the following jet leg as well. When we had not the long trip, I would be more often there. Special the many islands in the pacific are calling. After the disappointment about Fiji the Polynesia trip with Samoa and Tonga compensate a lot. And the next trip to French Polynesia and Cooks was also excellent. On top of my list are Papua New Guinea and the neighboring island countries.

Grosses Land und wenig Bevölkerung. Der letzte Kontinent historisch und geographisch hat schon seine Reize, aber ohne Auto geht da wegen den Entfernungen gar nichts. Nicht einmal auf so einer kleiner Insel wie X-mas. Zum Tauchen ist das Great Barrier Reef am bekanntesten, ich möchte es in 3 Abschnitten angehen. Aber eigentlich kann man rundherum um den Kontinent ins Wasser steigen. Da sind noch viele Trips nötig um das Potential auszuschöpfen. Exmouth und Perth an der Westküste reizt mich als nächstes.

Big country and small population. The last continent from historical and geographical point of view has his own charm, but because of the long distances you are lost without a car. As well on such a small island like X-mass. The most famous diving is in the Great Barrier Reef, I like to visit it in three steps. But actual all around the continent you can jump somewhere into the water. There are much more trips necessary to tap the full potential. Exmouth and Perth on the west coast are my next preferred destinations.

Die Stadt mit dem markanten Opera House ist für mich eine der schönsten auf dieser Erde. Im Zentrum reihen sich die Towers aneinander überragt von dem Fernsehturm. Im Gegensatz zum Rest des Landes kommt man auch ohne Auto zurecht und kann ganz gut shoppen. Am interessantesten fand ich die Gegend um Darling Harbour. Ausgebaut zu einem Ausgehzentrum reihen sich Kaffees, Pubs und Restaurants aneinander, ein grosses Imax ist auch vorhanden. Ein Hafenrundfahrt mit einer der vielen Fähren sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen.

The city with the prominent opera house is for me one of the most beautiful on this earth. In the center is located a group of towers overtopped by the high sky tower. In the compact center shopping is very nice and a car is not necessary in opposite to the rest of the country. The moist interesting is the area surrounding the Darling Harbor. There are some centers with coffee shops, pubs and restaurants, a big Imax is as well on the place. A harbor roundtrip with one of the many ferry boats is a not to miss chance.

In Sydney wird überall an der Küste getaucht, insbesondere die Strände im Norden eignen sich ganz hervorragend. Ausserdem sind an Wochenenden Boatsdives angesagt, manchmal ganz schön tief. Kaltwassertauchen ist angesagt, Temperatur schwankt zwischen 15 grad im Juli und 22 grad im Januar. Ich habe mir mit Mitte September nicht gerade die wärmste Saison ausgesucht mit 17 grad. Ich habe ein Wrack auf 50m besucht und einen netten Tauchgang an der Küste gemacht, wo ich die meine ersten 2 Port Jackson Haie gesehen habe.

In Sydney everywhere on the coastline will be submerged, especially the beaches in the north are excellent suited. Beside this on the weekends are boat dives, sometimes very deep. This area means cold water diving. Temperature balance between 15dgrs in July to 22 dgrs in January. I choose for myself not the warmest season mid of September with about 17dgrs. On boat dives I have visited a wrack at 50m and after this deep dive we had a nice relax dive close to the coastline, where I have seen my first two Port Jackson sharks.

Das weltberühmte Great Barrier Reef war für mich eine starke Enttäuschung. Die Ursache waren die Veranstaltern, die mit 20 kotzenden Japanern auf schlechten Plätzen Schnuppertauchen gemacht haben. Trotz täglichen Bootswechsel hat sich nichts geändert. Besser war es in Port Douglas, da war das Tauchen dann ganz ok und es ist die Ortschaft die am ehesten als Urlaubsort durchgeht. Baden kann man wegen den Wellen kaum, Nov - Feb Quallenalarm! Am besten mit Mietwagen die Küste absuchen und dort bleiben wo es einem gefällt.

The world famous Great Barrier Reef disappointed me strongly. The reason was the operators, which run the daily trips with 20 barfing Japanese on bad dive spots for introduce scuba dives. I changed daily the boats, but despite all promises no change. Much better it was in Port Douglas, there the diving was ok and this village soonest could be accepted as a holiday spot. Bathing is not comfortable due the high waves, and be aware in Nov - Feb is the jellyfish alarm. I recommend to take a rent a car, search on the coast line and stay where you like it most.

Das beste Tauchen von Australien, aber nur mit Mehrtagestrip erreichbar. Die achtstündige Überfahrt kann ziemlich rau werden, auf unserem Trip haben 22 von 24 auf heftigste gekotzt. Dann aber gegen Morgen tritt Ruhe ein und das Tauchen belohnt einen. Bei vier Tauchgängen sieht man eine Haifütterung mit ca. 30 Haien, in der Ferne einige Hammerhaie, Mantas und hat eine Supersicht. Dann wieder die ätzende Rückfahrt, aber vielleicht ist die See nicht immer so rau. Vor Ort in Cairns kann man Last Minute zu ganz guten Preisen ergattern.

The best diving in Australia, but only by a live aboard reachable. The eight hours crossing can become very uncomfortable, on our trip 20 from 22 throw up. But in the morning it becomes quiet and the diving compensate all previous trouble. On four dives it will be presented one shark feeding with about 30 sharks, in the back ground some hammerheads, Mantas and a superb visibility. Then comes again the god-awful return voyage, but maybe the sea is not all times so bad as we had it. On site in Cairns you can snatch a last minute offer with a good prize.

Gehört geographisch zu Asien, da nur etwa 400km südlich von Jakarta. Die Insel ist berühmt für jährliche Krabbenwanderungen Anfang Dezember, wenn die Strassen gesperrt werden um nicht unzählige Krabben zu überfahren. Kein Sandstrand. Mietwagen ein Muss, am besten gleich ab dem Flughafen. Tauchen an herrlichen Steilwänden. Mit dem Diveshop am besten schriftlich vorab Vereinbarungen treffen, da sich der Basenbesitzer an seine eigenen Regeln nicht hält und höhere Preise verrechnett. Dafür ist Lisa vom lokalen Reisebüro umso netter.

It belongs geographically to Asia, due its only about 400km south of Jakarta. The island is famous for the annual crab migration beginning of December, when the roads are locked to avoid damage on countless crabs. No sandy beach. Rent a car is a must, at the best straight from the airport. Diving is possible on excellent walls. With the dive shop you should made a written in advance agreement, due the Austrian owner charge you higher prices that his own homepage shows. But Lisa from the local travel agency is absolute trustful and recommendable.

Die Cook Inseln zwischen Tahiti und Tonga sind seit 1992 unabhängig, jedoch mit Neuseeland assoziiert. Neuseeland hat die Aussenpolitik übernommen, im Innern bestimmt Cook selber. Die Inselgruppe gehört zu Polynesien und die Bevölkerung sind weitgehend Maori. Die vulkanischen Inseln sind von Korallenriffen umgeben. Die Anreise erfolgt am besten über Neuseeland. Die Cooks sind von den bisher besuchten Inseln in der Südsee auch unter Berücksichtigung des Preis/Leistungsverhältnisses der beste Platz.

The Cook Islands between Tahiti and Tonga are an independent country since 1992, bur associated with New Zealand. Internally Cooks govern themselves, the outside relation and defense is covered by New Zealand. The island group is part of Polynesia and the population are mostly Maori. The volcanic islands are surrounded from coral reefs. Arrival is at the best via New Zealand. In my opinion from all the visited islands in the South Pacific under consideration of price performance relation the Cook Islands are the best holiday spot.

Die Hauptinsel der Cook Inseln ist sehr übersichtlich. Zumindest zeitweise sollte man sich einen Mietwagen nehmen und einmal um die Insel rumfahren. Für einen Mietwagen muss man für ein paar $ einen Führerschein ausstellen lassen. In Avarua gibt es einige Kneipen und auch etwas Nachtleben. Ansonsten spielt sich das Leben in den Strandhotels ab. Getaucht wird in den Passagen des Aussenriffs. Da kann es ganz schön ziehen, was auch einige Grossfische und Haie anzieht. Durch die Strömung gab es auch bessere Sicht als in Aitutaki.

The main island of the Cook Islands is very well arranged. At least for a while a rental car is recommended to circle the island. For a rental car you have to spend a couple of $ for a local driving license. In Avarua are some pubs and also some nightlife is available. Otherwise everything else happens in the beach hotels. The diving is performed in the passages of the outside reef. there could be some strong currents, what also attracts pelagic and sharks. Because of the current the visibility was also better then in Aitutaki.

Das schönste Atoll in den Cook Inseln ist Aitutaki, das Bora Bora sehr ähnlich ist. Zur Insel kommt man von Raratonga mit einem einheimischen Flieger. Rund um die Insel gibt es viele Traumstrände. Aufgrund der begrenzten Entfernungen kann man die Insel gut mit einem Fahrrad erkunden. Paradise Cove liegt direkt am Strand und hat nette Bungalows. Etwas mühsamer ist es ein Restaurant zu finden. Getaucht wird am Aussenriff mit vielen Korallen und Adlerrochen. Es läuft sehr entspannt ab, da wir nie mehr als 3 Taucher waren.

The best atoll in the Cook Islands is Aitutaki, which looks similar like Bora Bora. The arrival to the island happens with a small local plane. Around the island are a lot of nice dream beaches. Due the limited distances the island could be conveniently explored by a bicycle. Paradise Cove is located direct on a nice beach and has nice bungalows. A bit more difficult it could be to find a restaurant. The diving will be performed on the outside reef with many corals and eagle rays. Everything is very relaxed due we was never more then 3 divers.

Melanesien erstreckt sich von Papua bis Fiji. Mein erster Trip in das gelobte Land: der Traum von der Südsee ist ausgeträumt. Da wird auch nur mit Wasser gekocht. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis stimmt einfach nicht und so toll sind die Plätze auch nicht. Wir sind nur mit dem Flugticket und Reiseführer losgezogen und haben alles vor Ort organisiert. Ging eigentlich ganz gut, aber etwas mehr Vorbereitung wäre besser. Die Ostseite der Hauptinsel hat deutlich mehr Regen als die Westseite, wie wir auch lernen mussten.

Melanesia range from Papua New Guinea to Fiji. This was my first trip to the promised land: the dream about the south pacific ended. They cook also only with water. The price performance relationship is not correct and the spots are not so fantastic as expected. We started with the airline ticket and a traveler guide and managed everything on site. That was sufficient but a bit better preparation would be better. The east side of the main island has much more rain fall then the west side, as we had to learn by ourselves too.

Suva ist die Hauptstadt von Fiji und die grösste Stadt in der Südsee. Von einem kleinem Flughafen werden alle regionalen Flüge durchgeführt. Anschluss zum internationalen Flughafen in Nadi wird mit kleinen Flugzeugen oder auf der Strasse durchgeführt. Dabei umrundet man die halbe Insel und es ist ein ganz interssanter Trip, aber natürlich verliert man einen halben Tag damit. Suva selbst ist nicht touristisch, das Strassenbild wird von Einheimischen Indern stark bestimmt. Auch das Einkaufen ist mehr auf die Einheimischen eingestellt.

Suva is the capitol of Fiji and the biggest city in the south pacific. From a small airport all local flights will be performed. The connection to the international airport in Nadi will be realized with small airplanes or on the road. On this trip you circle the half island and it is a nice journey, but of course you loose a half day with this. Suva themselves is not touristy, the pictures on the roads are covered by local Indians, which are about the half of the population. Also the shopping is more fixed on the locals then on tourists.

In Nadi ist der internationale Flughafen und damit auch der Turistenumschlagplatz von Fiji wenn nicht sogar von der ganzen Südsee. Entsprechend touristisch und teuer ist auch alles in der näheren Umgebung aufgezogen. In der Nacht kommen die Grossflieger herein und entladen die Touris die dann früh morgens auf die im Westen vorgelagerten Inseln beziehungsweise an die Südküste weiter verteilt werden. In Nadi selbst gibt es nur ein paar Läden in denen man die letzten Dollars beim Warten auf den Abflug ausgeben kann.

In Nadi is the international airport located und with this it is the tourist reloading point of Fiji when not from the whole south pacific area. Accordant touristy and expensive is everything in the closer surrounding prepared. In the night the huge airplanes come in and load down the tourists which will be in the earlier morning hours distributed to the western offshore islands or to the south costs hotels. In Nadi themselves are only some small shops where you can spend your last dollars waiting on your departing airplane.

Nach der langen Anreise bietet sich die Coral Coast zum Eingewöhnen an. Mehrere grosse Hotels sind in erster Linie auf australische Touristen ausgerichtet. Aufgrund des Jetlegs sind wir immer früh ins Bett. Nach dem langen Flug hat mein Compi gesponnen und mir beim ersten TG zuviel Deko aufgedrückt. Dadurch hat er mir das Vergnügen verschafft, allein im Wasser zu sein während unter mir ein grosser Tigerhai Runden drehte. War schon ein seltsames Gefühl. Das Tauchen war ganz ordentlich, viele Korallen, Rifffische, Bullsharks und Riffhaie.

After the long distance travel the Coral Coast is the best place to acclimatize. Multiple bigger hotels are adjusted for Australian tourists. Because of the jet leg we went every day very early to bed. After the long distance flight my dive computer was crazy and forced me to a extra long deco stop on the first dive. It was a pleasure for me to sit alone in the water and below me a tiger shark was circling around. This was an really an unordinary feeling for me. The diving was proper, many corals, reef fishes, bull sharks an reef sharks.

Das beeindruckendste an der renommierten Tauchadresse Kadavu war der permanente Regen, der nichtvorhandene Strand und die einfachen Hütten. Und das für einen stolzen Preis, begründet mit Eco Aktivitäten. Das erste und einzige mal haben wir eine Buchung in unserem Urlaub vorzeitig abgebrochen. Schon die An- und Abfahrt war hart, und wir mussten die folgende Tage unsere Klamotten alle trocknen lassen. Innerhalb des Riffes ist das Tauchen bescheiden, ausserhalb wurde leider nur einmal angefahren. Da sind gleich 3 Mantas gekommen.

The most impressive on the famous diving location Kadavu was the permanent rainfall, the not existing beach and the very basic bungalows. And that for a proud price, justified by some eco activities. This was the first and only sole exception we terminated a booking in our holidays. Already the arrival and departure trip was bitter and we had to dry the following days all our clothes. Within the reef border the diving is lowly, outside we went unfortunately only ones. And on this trip immediately three mantas appeared.

Bei unserer Flucht von Kadavu gab es nur eine Hoffnung: das in den touristischen Mamanucas das Wetter besser ist - und es war. Durch diese Inseln westlich der Hauptinsel wurde Fiji bekannt. Eine Touri Insel nach der anderen, das Publikum überwiegend australisch, jedoch ist ziemlich die ganze Welt vertreten. Empfang wie es sich gehört mit Bula Gesang. Essen findet im gehobenen Still statt. Der Strand ist exzellent, bis auf die 5pm-Moskitos, die überfallartig den Strand besetzen und ganz fürchterlich stechen. Das Tauchen war auch ganz gut.

In our escape from Kandavu there was only one hope: a nicer weather in the touristy Mamanucas - and it was better. This islands west of the main island made Fiji famous. One touristy island after the next, the visitors are mostly Australian, but the whole world is represented. The greeting in its good manners is performed with Bula singing. The food is served on a upper level. The beach is excellent except the 5pm mosquitoes, which are out of the blue occupies the beach and pierce very horrible. The diving was as well quite good.

Nahe an unserem Garden Island Ressort zieht sich der 180 grad Meridian oder Datumsgrenze entlang, die jedoch zu praktischen Zwecken einige hundert km weiter in den Osten verschoben ist. Wir sind ins Grübeln gekommen, wie das mit dem Tagessprung funktioniert. Das Tauchen ist noch das beste in Fiji, eine professionelle Basis und ordentliche TG. Warum die aber seit Jahren von Rodale Preise als die Weltbesten erhalten konnte ich nicht herausfinden. Das weltberühmte Rainbow Reef hat mich jedenfalls nicht besonders beeindruckt.

Close to our Garden Island Resort is the 180 dgs Meridian or the dateline, which is practically moved some hundred km to east to avoid the date change within a country. We have automatically speculated how does it work with the day jump on the dateline. The diving is the best in Fiji, with a professional dive operator and I had some good dives there. I could not identify why they receive since years permanent the award as the world best. Anyway the world famous Rainbow Reef with its soft coral wall did not impress me very much.

Die bekannteste Inselgruppe in Polynesien wird häufig auch mit dem Namen der Hauptinsel Tahiti umschrieben. Die Gesellschaftsinseln sind Vulkaninseln mit den bekannten Namen Tahiti, Moorea und Bora Bora. Im Tuamotu Archipel sind Korallenatolle mit ausgezeichneten Tauchmöglichkeiten. Jeder Reisende sollte einen gut gefüllten Geldbeutel mitbringen, da die Inseln ein unglaublich hohes Preisniveau haben. Für eine lausige Hütte zahlt man locker 150 Euro. Die Flüge und Hotels sollte man vorab buchen um Überraschungen zu vermeiden.

The best known island group in Polynesia, often also called with the name of the main island Tahiti. The Society Islands are volcano islands with the well known names Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. In the Tuamotu Archipelago are large coral atolls with excellent diving possibilities. Every traveler should be prepared to spend a lot of money, due the islands have a unbelievable high price level. For a lousy cottage they ask for more then 150 Euro. The local flights and accommodation should be booked in advance to avoid surprises.

Auf der Hauptinsel von Französisch Polynesien mit der Hauptstadt Papeete landet man als erstes. Die Stadt hat nichts sehenswertes und man sollte schnellst möglich weiterfliegen. Für eine Übernachtung ist das zentral im Hafen gelegene Prince Hinoi gerade noch erträglich. Flüge kann man direkt bei der Polynesian Airline buchen. Wie wir später erfahren haben soll das Tourist Center Hotels in ganz Polynesien recht günstig vermieten. Recherchen sollten hierzu frühzeitig erfolgen, oder man zahlt ganz heftig wie uns ergangen.

On the main island of French Polynesia with the capitol Papeete every visitor will arrive at first. The city has nothing worth to be seen and should be left as soon as possible. For a one night stay the central located Prince Hinoi Hotel is just acceptable. Flights could be booked direct at the Polynesian Airlines. As we learned later the Tourist Center reserve Hotels all over Polynesia to good conditiones. Investigations for this should be arranged in time, othervice you will pay incredible charges as we have done on most places there.

Das zweitgrößte Atoll auf dieser Erde mit 16km Durchmesser und bekannt für seine gute Tauchplätze. Getaucht wir in den Kanälen an beiden Seiten der Hauptinsel. Die Tauchgänge gehen auf den Grund der Kanäle in etwa 50m und mit der Strömung lässt man sich dann in die Lagune reintreiben. Umkreist wird man dabei von bis zu 50 Grauen, Siberspitzen und Riffhaien. Einen meiner besten Tauchgänge hatte ich hier mit 2 Delphinen für zwanzig Minuten, die uns immer wieder umkreist haben zum Greifen nahe herankamen.

The second biggest atoll on this earth is about 16km wide and well known for the very good dive spots. Dive sites are in the channels on both sites of the main island. The dive excursions goes to the bottoms of the channels about 50m deep and with the current the divers drift into the lagune inside. There could be about 50 grey sharks, silver tips and reef sharks. On one of my best dives ever I had here with 2 dolphins for about 20 minutes. They alltimes circuled us and come as close as you could nearby touch them with your hands.

Die Insel mit der wohl berühmtesten Lagune zieht die Urlauber aus der ganzen Welt an. Bereits beim Anflug strahlt einem das Wasser in vielen Blauvarianten entgegen und darin die unbezahlbaren Wasserbungalows. In dem berühmten Restaurant Bloody Mary sind die Namen von halb Hollywood gelistet. Entsprechend sind auch die Preise ziemlich gesalzen. Wir sind einmal mit dem Fahrrad um die Insel und bei meinem ersten Tauchgang habe ich meine Kamera geflutet - so sind die Mantas und weitere Tauchgänge nicht mehr dokumentiert.

The island with the maybe most famous lagone attract tourists from all over the world. Already at landing the water shows their many different blue colours and also the priceless water bungalows. In the famous restaurant Bloody Mary are the names of half Holywood listed. Therefore are of course the prices extremly high. We made once per bicycle the roundtrip around the island and on my first dive trip on the island I have flooded my camera, so the mantas and the following dive sites are no more pictured.

Die Nachbarinsel von Tahiti kann mit einer Fähre erreicht werden oder mit einem 10 min Flug. Die Autofahrt entlang der Küste ist sehr interessant, die Berge neben der Strasse gehen ziemlich steil hoch. Die deutsche Tauchbasis Fun Dive ist sehr zu empfehlen, organisiert auch Zimmer zu vernünftigen Preisen. Das Vai Moana war das erste Hotel das seinen Preis wert war. Beim Tauchen sieht man die teilweise großen Zitronenhaie, leider ohne UW Kamera. Der Strand war sehr schön und so hat Moorea bei uns einen ganz guten Eindruck hinterlassen.

The neighboring island of Tahiti could be reached by the ferry boat or with a 10 min flight. The car drive along the coast line is very interesting, the mountains straight beside the road run steep up. The german dive operator Fun Dive is very recommended, manage also rooms for a reasonable price. Vai Moana was the first hotel which was worth the money. On the dive trips could be seen large citrus sharks, for me unfortunatelly without camera. The beach is also very nice and so Moorea left a very good impresion.

Eines der schönsten Länder auf diesem Planet. Im Norden subtropisch, im Süden kälter. Ich war schon vier mal da, bisher immer auf der Nordinsel. Wer nicht viel Zeit hat sollte auf jeden Fall in die Bay of Islands fahren und Auckland besichtigen. Als nächstes möchte ich die Südinsel besuchen. Da möchte ich im angeblich klarsten See der Erde tauchen, an der Ostküste die Blauhaie sehen und einmal in den Milford Sound springen. Auch an Sehenswürdigkeiten über Wasser soll es da nicht mangeln, siehe auch den Film der Herr der Ringe.

One of the nicest countries on this world. In north sub tropical, in south colder. I was already four times there, up to now all times on the north island. who don't have much time should in each case visit the Bay of Islands and Auckland. At the next I like to visit the south island. There I like to dive the supposed clearest lake in this world, on the east coast I like to see the blue sharks and one times I like to jump into the Milford Sound. There is also a lot of sightseeing over the water, see the famous movie Lord of Rings.

Die Stadt der Segel am Ende der Welt. Im riesigen Hafen wimmelt es nur so von den schönsten Yachten die man sich vorstellen kann. Auch das Land der Kiwis, wobei damit nicht die Frucht sondern der Vogel Kiwi gemeint ist. Im Hafen abends zu essen ist eines der schönsten Erlebnisse die man sich vorstellen kann. Das Land hat nur 4 Mio Einwohner, über 1/4 davon lebt in Auckland. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich auch der höchste Turm in der südlichen Hemisphäre, von dem die Wagemutigen einen Bungeesprung machen können.

The city of sails on the end of the world. In the giant harbor are placed swarms of the nicest yachts what you can imagine. Also the so called country of the kiwis, meaning the bird Kiwi and not the fruit. To eat in the harbor in the evening is one of the most fantastic experience what you can believe. The country has a population of only 4 mio, more then 1/4th of them lives in Auckland. I was specially impressed by the conspicuous highest tower of the southern hemisphere, from which some adventures people risk a bungee jump.

Der schönste Platz war für mich die Bay of Islands nördlich von Auckland. Gelbe Sandstrände und das blaue Meer wechseln sich mit grünen Hügeln ab, auf denen Schafe und Kühe weiden. Dazwischen sind kleinere Siedlungen eingebunden und man hat immer das Gefühl das genug Platz vorhanden ist. Manchmal hatte ich den Eindruck in einem Bilderbuch von Europa zu sein. Das Klima ist gemässigt und kommt uns Europäern sehr entgegen. Ich war meistens nur in kälteren Jahreszeiten da, wo es auch regnerisch und stürmisch sein kann.

One of the nicest places is for me the bay of islands north of Auckland. Yellow beaches and the blue sea alternate with the green hills in all colors, on which sheep's and cows graze. In between are located small villages but all times you have the feeling that there is enough space available. Sometimes I had the impression to be in a picture book of Europe. The climate is temperate and comes towards European feeling. I was most times in the colder time of the year there, where it could become also rainy and stormy.

Die Bay of Plenty befindet sich südlich von Auckland und wartet mit vielen touristischen Attraktionen auf. Der erste Anlaufpunkt ist für Touristen sicher Rotorua, einer von vier Plätzen auf dieser Erde mit Geysiren. In der Umgebung sind viele sehenswerte maorische Kultstätten. Das Städtchen hat eine recht gute touristische Infrastruktur mit Hotels, Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und Kneipen. In der Bay of Plenty befindet sich die vulkanische White Island, an der ich unbedingt tauchen wollte. Leider war aufgrund des Wetters kein Trip möglich.

The Bay of Plenty is located south of Auckland and present a lot of touristy attractions. The first point to see for tourists is Rotorua, one of the four places on this earth with geysers. In the surrounding area are many cultural sites of the Maori. The city has a nice touristy infrastructure with hotels, shopping centers and restaurants and pubs. In the Bay of Plenty is located the White Island, where I was strongly interested to dive. Unfortunately due the bad weather no trip was scheduled and I could not dive. Maybe next time.

Südlich der Bay of Plenty ist eine Hochebene aus der drei Vulkanen hochragen. Bereits die Anfahrt ist sehr fotogen, wenn die impossanten Berge am Horizont auftauchen. Immer wieder sind wir angehalten und haben Fotos gemacht. Der höchste Berg ist der Mt. Ruapehu, wo auch Teile des Films Herr der Ringe gedreht wurden. Die Bergspitze ist ganzjährig schneebedeckt und es sind schweizer Seilbahnen installiert um im Winter Ski fahren zu können. Wenn es bewölkt ist wirkt die vulkanische Gegend wirklich gespenstisch.

South of the Bay of Plenty is a mountainous region from where three volcano's ascent. Already the trip is very lovely, when the impressive mountains appear on the horizon. We stopped more then once to snap some pictures. The highest mountain is the Mt. Ruapehu, where parts of the movie Lord of the Rings was shoot. The top of the mountain is all the year snow covered and there are Swiss cable cars installed to run ski in the winter time. When it is cloudy the area produce really a ghastly impression to the visitors.

Die Poor Knights sind mehrere kleine Inseln vor Whangarei und das berühmteste Tauchrevier in Neuzeeland. Trotz aller anderslautenden Werbebotschaften ist Kaltwassertauchen angesagt, mein Nasstauchanzug war hart am Limit. Die Sicht war gut, aber am meisten haben mich die Farben überrascht. Das Kelp wiegt sich im strahlend blauen Wasser abwechselnd in grün, gelb und rot. Dazwischen schwimmen viele grosse Stachelrochen, Makrellen und andere Fische. Auf der Rückfahrt haben wir noch das Vergnügen gehabt Orcas zu sehen.

The Poor Knights are a couple of small islands in front of Whangarei und they are the most famous dive spot in New Zeeland. In opposite to some comments it is cold water diving, my Wetsuit was hard on the limit. The visibility was fine, but the most impressive was the colors for me. The kelp rock in the brilliant blue water changing from green to yellow and red. In between swim a lot of big stingrays, makrelles and other fishes. On the way back from the islands we had the pleasure to see some orca.

Die Halbinsel Coromandel ist durch seine Nähe zu Auckland ein Wochenendausflugsziel. Die Küstenlandschaft mit den vorgelagerten Inseln sieht wunderbar aus, die Strände waren aber nicht so begeisternd. Die Touristenattraktion Hot water Beach mit heissen Quellen am Strand ist nach meiner Meinung Zeitverschwendung. Sehenswert ist dagegen die Cathedral Cove, ein grosse Höhle mit interessanten Felsformationen. Das Tauchen war nicht besonders, miserable Sicht und nichts ausser Kelp war geboten.

The peninsula Coromandel is due its proximity to Auckland a weekend destination. The coastal landscape with the nearby islands looks marvelous, the beaches was however not so interesting. The tourist attraction Hot water Beach with hot springs the beach is according to my opinion wasting of time. The Cathedral Cove in oposite is despite the very long foot walk worth to be visited, it is a large cave with interesting rock formations around. Diving was not very interesting, bad visibility and nothing to see.

Micronesien besteht aus vielen kleinen Inseln die sich östlich von Asien in den Pazifik hineinziehen. Natürlich ist Palau eines der beste Tauchgebiete dieser Erde und die kleinen Inseln sind einmalig und sehenswert. Aber für Nichttaucher bietet es wenig. Auf der Hauptinsel, wo die meisten Besucher verbleiben, gibt es keine Sandstrände, die Hauptstadt ist ein Dorf und sonst ist auch nichts geboten. Weitere Inseln wie die Mantainsel Yap, die Wrackinsel Truk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, die Marianen und Marschall Inseln möchte ich noch sehen.

Micronesia contains a lot of small islands which are placed east of Asia and extract into the Pacific. Of course is Palau one of the best dive spots in this earth and all the small islands are very unique and worth to see. But for the non diver it offers not so much. On the main island where the most visitors remain are no sand beaches, the capitol is a village and other vice there is nothing provided. Other islands like the manta island Yap, the wrack island Truck, Pohnpei, Kosrae the Mariana islands and the Marschall islands I like to see as well.

Die meisten Reisenden werden wahrscheinlich in Koror bleiben und auf Tagestrips Palau erkunden. Für die Anfahrt und Abfahrt haben wir jeweils eine Nacht im West Plaza verbracht, das ein akzeptables Preis-Leistungs-Verhältniss bietet und ein nettes Restaurant besitzt. In das Zentrum ist ein längerer Fussmarsch oder ein Taxi erforderlich. Die Preise und Sitten in Koror sind nach amerikanischen Gepflogenheiten ausgerichtet und die Anwesenheit der vielen japanischen Touristen treibt Preise weiter in die Höhe. Die Stadt ist kein attraktiver Aufenthaltsort.

The most travelers will stay in Koror and explore Palau on daytrips. On each arrival and departure we spend one night in the West Plaza by the sea, which offers an acceptable price performance relation and additionally owns a nice restaurant. To the center is a longer walk or a taxi necessary. The prices and rules in Koror are similar as the us American conventions and the presence of the many Japanese tourists drives the prices much more in the high. This city is not a very attractive domicile to stay for a longer time.

Nachdem ich einen Strand wollte bin ich auf die Lösung mit Carp Island gestossen. Eine von Japanern betriebene Insel im Süden des Atolls mit einem ganz guten Strand. Wir mussten uns nur mit japanischen Sitten und Essen anfreunden. Es gibt noch einen Vorteil: die ganzen Topplätze sind in ein paar Minuten erreicht, und man spart sich die 1-2 Stunden Anreise jeden Tag, wenn man wie üblich in Koror wohnt. Tauchen bietet was das Herz begehrt: Haie, Mantas und die Strömung pfeift einem um die Ohren das man sich die Maske festhalten muss.

Because I needed a sand beach I found the solution with Carp Island. An island operated by Japanese in the south of the atoll with a quite nice sandy beach. We had only to chum up with the Japanese style and food. There is another advantage on this island: all the top spots are reachable within minutes, and we saved the 1-2 hours journey every day when you stay as mostly do in Koror. The diving has all what the divers love: numerous sharks, manta rays and the current sough around the ears that you have to hold your mask.

Das unabhängige Samoa besteht im wesentlichen aus zwei grossen Inseln, Upulu und Sava'i. Die tropischen Inseln verabschieden jeden Tag als letzte auf dieser Erde. Samoa ist touristisch nicht besonders erschlossen, es gibt nur wenige Resorts, die sich im wesentlichen auf die Hauptstadt Apia, die Strände an der Südküste Upulus und im nördlichen Teil von Sava'i konzentrieren. Die samoanischen Inseln sind absolut sehenswert, machen einen sehr sauberen Eindruck und wirken schon fast wie ein angelegter tropischer Garten.

The independent Samoa basically consists of two big islands, Upulu and Sava'i. The tropical islands say good buy to every day as the last country on this earth, but have the same time zone as Tonga on the other side of dateline. Samoa is not notably developed for tourism, there are only a few resorts existing. Most of them are placed in the capitol Apia, on the beaches in southern Upulu and on the north part of Sava'i. The Samoan islands are absolute well worth seeing, make a clean impression and impress like a disposed beautiful tropical garden.

Die Hauptinsel des unabhängigen Samoa und Ankunftspunkt für alle Touristen. Die Hauptstadt Apia ist eigentlich ein Dorf und befindet sich an der Nordküste der länglichen Insel. Nachdem die Sandstrände im Süden der Insel sind haben wir uns dahin orientiert. Das Resort liegt an einem wunderschönen Strand und hat sehr nette Bungalows, ist jedoch hoffnungslos überteuert. Wenn man aber die Kombination Strandhotel mit Tauchen sucht, gibt es eigentlich keine Alternative. Das Tauchen war ganz gut, warmes Wasser, jedoch wenig Fische.

The main island of the independent Samoa and arrival point for all tourists. The capitol is regular only a village and is located on the north of the long shaped island. Because the beaches are on the south side of the island we have managed to get there too. The resort is located on a beautiful beach and has some nice bungalows, but is hopeless overpriced. When you are looking for a combination beach resort with diving, there is no alternative on the island. The diving was quite nice, warm water, but less fish activities.

Die Nachbarinsel ist mit der Fähre binnen einer knappen Stunde zu erreichen. Um die Insel mit dem Auto einmal zu umrunden ist ein Tag ausreichend. Sehenswert sind die Blowholes im Süden und die Lavafelsen im Norden. Im Norden gibt es auch sehr schöne Sandstrände und kleine Hotelanlagen. Trotz vorheriger Anruf und pünktlichen Erscheinen war das Tauchboot früher losgefahren und trotz aller Versicherungen des dämlichen Tauchguys dass das Boot gleich wieder zurück ist habe ich nach zwei Stunden Warterei abgebrochen. Sehr unzuverlässig!

The neighbor island could be reached with the ferry boat just under one hour. To circuit the island with the car is one day enough. Very impressive are the blow holes in the south and the lava rocks in the north of the island. North there are also very nice beaches and small resorts. Despite an advanced phone call and an exact arrival the dive boat already left earlier and despite all promises of the sappy dive guide that the boat will be back soon I have terminated the waiting after more then two hours. This dive shop is very unreliable!

Polynesia - Tonga

Das Königreich Tonga ist das erste Land auf dieser Erde das jeden neuen Tag begrüsst. Um dieses zu erreichen wurde in die Datumsgrenze eine Ausbuchtung eingebaut. Man sollte beachten das Tonga keine Sommerzeit hat, auch wenn manche Handys das in Ihrem Kalender eingestellt haben. Im wesentlichen besteht Tonga aus drei weit auseinander liegenden Inselgruppen, die Hauptinsel Tongatapu, Haapa'i und Vava'u. Wir waren die meiste Zeit auf Vava'u und haben mit einer Übernachtung auch noch Tongatapu erkundet.

The Kingdom of Tonga is the first country on this world that regards every new day. To reach this in the dateline is a swell to the east build in. You should consider that Tonga has no daylight saving time, as well when some mobil phones indicate this in their build in calendar. Basically Tonga consists of three long way away located island groups, the main island Tangatapu, Hapa'i and the most northern group Vava'u. We spend most of the time on Vava'u and explored with one overnight stay as well Tongatapu.

Die Hauptinsel des Königsreichs ist die grösste Insel und befindet sich in der südlichsten Inselgruppe. Die Hauptstadt Nuku'alofa ist wie in der Südsee üblich nur ein Dorf. Wie auch schon in Reiseführern notiert gibt diese Insel nicht viel her und kann in 1-2 Tagen besichtigt werden. Um einen Mietwagen zu bekommen benötigt man einen lokalen Führerschein, den man in 10min erhält. Dann am besten gleich einmal rund um die Insel fahren. Im Dateline Hotel konnten wir den alten König beim Baden im Schwimmingpool beobachten.

The main island of the kingdom is the biggest island and is located in the most southern island group. The capitol Nuku'alofa is as usual in the south pacific only a small village. As already noted in the travel guides this island is not very interesting and could be explored within 1-2 days. To get a rental car you need a local driving license, which you can get within a 10 min procedure at the police station. Then at the best just drive round the island. In the dateline hotel we could see the old King swimming in the pool.

Diese Inselgruppe ist die nördlichste und liegt näher an Samoa als an der Hauptinsel. Auch bekannt als Anlegeplatz vieler Pazifik Segler kann man im November auch Wale beobachten. Absolut empfehlswert ist das Resort des (ex-) deutschen Dieter der seine Gäste persönlich empfängt und am Abend einige seiner vielen Erlebnisse erzählt. Das Resort steht unmittelbar an einem schönen Strand und man kann direkt vor der Haustüre schnorcheln. Die Sichtweite Unterwasser ist berauschend, das Blau war unglaublich intensiv, jedoch wenig Fische zu sehen.

This group of islands is the most northern and is located clothier to Samoa then to the main island. Also well known as resting place of many pacific cruisers you can watch in November the whales. Absolute recommendable is the resort of the (ex-) German Dieter who regards his guests personally and in the evening tells some of his many stories. The resort is located on a beautiful beach and you can straight in front of your door snorkel. The visibility underwater is exhilarating and the blue was incredible intensive, but not so much fishes to see.
