Der schwarze Kontinent bietet viele Möglichkeiten um Urlaub zu machen und auch zum Tauchen. Ägypten ist sicher das Highlight in der näheren Umgebung zu Europa. Kenia und die Ostküste habe ich aufgrund der Malaria Risiken noch nicht probiert. Schwierigkeiten bereitete mir die Abgrenzung der Länder in dem Bereich zwischen Afrika, Asien und Europa. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch setzt sich immer mehr der Begriff Mittleren Osten durch, obwohl Naher Osten auch verwendet wird. Geographisch korrekt ist die Zuordnung zu West Asien, in anderen Bereichen wie Sport und Kultur erfolgt teilweise die Zuordnung zu Europa. Der Mittlere Osten bietet auch einige Möglichkeiten zum Tauchen, wie die Emirates und Oman.

The black continent offers a lot of possibilities for holiday travels and also for diving. Egypt is of course the highlight in the neighborhood for the European diving community. Kenya and the east cost I have not yet tried due fear of the malaria risk. I had some difficulties to allocate the countries in the region between Africa, Asia and Europe. In common publications there is more and more used the term Middle East, but also Near East is an appropriate term, created from the European point of view. But Geographically is the allocation to West Asia correct, in other areas like sport and culture is sometimes the allocation to Europe used. The Middle East Region also offers good possibilities for diving, like the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Die Republik Armenien liegt in West Asien zwischen dem Schwarzen und Kaspischem Meer und hat nach der Auflösung der Sovietunion 1991 seine Unabhängigkeit erhalten. Das bergige Land liegt in den südlichen Hängen des Kaukasus. Die Grenzen nach Aserbaidschan und Türkei sind aufgrund politischer Spannungen und dem Streit um das von Armeniern bewohnte Berg Karabach geschlossen. Armenien war das erste Land das die christliche Religion als Staatsreligion übernommen hat. Das Land wurde meistens von einer fremden Macht regiert.

The Republic Armenia is located in West Asia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and reached 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union the independence. The mountainous country is located on the southern hillside of the Caucasus Mountains. The borders to Azerbaidaschan and Turkey are closed due political tensions and the conflict about the region Mountainous Karabakh where mostly Armenian lives. Armenia was the first country which introduced Christianity as state religion. The country was mostly controlled by foreign powers.

Die Hauptstadt von Armenien liegt in Sichtweite des Berges Ararat, der auf türkischem Boden steht. Es hat mich sehr überrascht, wie europäisch diese Stadt und auch die Bevölkerung wirken. Hinter der Türkei habe ich eigentlich mehr asiatische Kultur erwartet. Das Zentrum ist eine grosse Baustelle in der ein Palast neben dem nächsten entsteht. Natürlich sind alle westlichen Marken wie Armani und Boss schon vertreten. Nachdem die Stadt in einem Spannungsgebiet liegt sollte vor der Reise die aktuelle Situation überprüft werden.

The capitol of the Armenian Republic is located in the sight distance of the mountain Ararat, who stands on Turkish ground. I was very surprised how European this city and the population looks. Behind the Turkey I have expected much more Asian culture. The centre is a big construction site where one palace behind the next are growing. Of course there are all western brands like Armani and Hugo Boss are represented. Due the town is located in a region with heavy tensions before a trip the actual public safety situation should be double checked.

Das Königreich Bahrein liegt im arabischen Golf und besteht aus etwa 30 Inseln. Die Hauptstadt Al Manamah liegt im Norden der Hauptinsel. Das Scheichtum hat etwa 600.000 Einwohner. Die Haupteinnahmequellen sind natürlich Öl, jedoch sollen die Vorräte bald erschöpft sein. Das Land ist über eine 25km lange Brücke verbunden mit Saudi Arabien. Einmal im Jahr rückt die Nation in die Schlagzeilen wenn das jährliche Formel 1 Rennen ausgetragen wird. An der Nordspitze soll es Tauchplätze geben, Perlenzucht soll auch vorhanden sein.

The Kingdom Bahrain is located in the Arabian Gulf and consists of about 30 Islands. The capitol Al Manamah is located in the north of the main island. The sheikhdom has a population of about 600.000. The main income is of course the oil, but the resources should soon be finished. The country is connected via a 25km long bridge with Saudi Arabia. Once a year the nation into the worlds headlines, when the annual Formula 1 race take place. On the north tip should be some dive spots and pearl farms are also available.

Die Hauptstadt vom Scheichtum Bahrain ist eine moderne arabische Metropole die Ähnlichkeit mit Dubai hat. Viele Baustellen insbesondere an Wolkenkratzern zeigen das sich die Stadt noch am Anfang ihrer Entwicklung befindet. In den kleinen Restaurants, hauptsächlich Libanesen und Philippinos, wird kein Alkohol ausgeschenkt, dazu muss man schon in die grossen Hotels gehen. Shopping soll es auch geben, besonders Gold wird angepriessen. Der Preislevel liegt erfreulich niedrig, für eine Stange Zigs zahlt man gerade 8 Euro.

The capitol of Sheikhdom Bahrain is a modern Arabic Metropolis which looks very similar to Dubai. Many construction sites especially on sky towers shows that the city is still on the beginning of their development. In the smaller restaurants on the road, mainly Lebanese and Philippines, no alcohol is served, to enjoy this you have to enter one of the bigger hotel buildings. Shopping should be also available, specially Gold is offered. The price level is fortunately very low, for a carton of cigarettes you will just pay about 8 Euro.

Ägypten ist die Hochburg des europäischen Tauchbetriebes. Bei nur vier Flugstunden und einem guten Korallenmeer mit Temperaturen zwischen 20 - 28 grad auch nicht verwunderlich. Weiterhin ist natürlich die 3.000 Jahre alte Kultur alleine eine Reise wert. An einem Tag in Cairo 150 € nur an Trinkgeldern auszugeben ist keine Kunst. Nach der Besichtigung der Pyramiden und des Museums kann ich jedem nur empfehlen schnell wieder abzuhauen. Am Roten Meer ist dieses Land wunderbar und die Tauchplätze sind auch nicht ohne.

Egypt is the stronghold of the European diving community. It does not wonder due its only four hours flight from Europe and equipped with a good coral sea and water temperatures range between 20 - 28 dgrs C. Furthermore there is as well the 3.000 years old culture worth for a trip. To spend on one day 150 € only for tipping is not a problem in Cairo. After visiting the pyramids and the museum I recommend everybody to leave very fast this biggest city of Africa. This country is wonderful on the Red Sea and the dive spots are great as well.

In der ägyptischen Hauptstadt geht ohne Bakschisch gar nichts, schon der erste Taxifahrer wollte uns über das Ohr hauen. Und so ging es den ganzen nächsten Tag weiter. Bakschisch für alles, ob es nur für das Drücken eines Aufzugknopfes oder für ein Foto an den Pyramiden. Und die Jungs sind so penetrant, das man Sie gar nicht los wird. Die Pyramiden und die Sphinx am Stadtrand von Cairo sind natürlich gigantisch. Das Nationalmuseum mit der ganzen ägyptischen Kultur darf man sich auch nicht entgehen lassen, aber dann nichts wie weg.

In the Egypt capitol absolute nothing happens without baksheesh and already the first taxi driver tried to cheat us. And so it continued the whole next day. Baksheesh for everything, if it is only for unquestioned pressing of the elevator button or to be by chance on your photo on the pyramids. And the guys are so obtrusive that they will not leave you alone. The pyramids and the sphinx on the city border of Cairo are of course gigantic. The National Museum with the whole ancient culture of Egypt should be not missed.

Luxor war zum Zeitpunkt der ägyptischen Dynastien ein Machtzentrum und die vielen Baudenkmäler zeugen noch heute davon. Es war auch ein erklärtes Ziel von Grabräubern in den folgenden Jahrhunderten. Man kann sich auf einer Bootstour am Nil herumfahren lassen.Wir haben Luxor in einem Tagestrip von Safaga aus gemacht, dieses bieten sich insbesondere für den letzten tauchfreien Tag an.

Luxor was at the time of the Egypt Dynasties a center of power and the number of monuments document this aera up to today. It was also a destination of the tomb raiders in the following centuries. In the famous valley of the kings with the tombs appears temperatures of more then 50 dgrs C. What you can see is culture from its best sides. Also possible are boat trips on the giant river Nil. We have visited Luxor on a day trip basis from Safaga. This is the best way to spend the last dive free day on your vacations.

Hurghada ist ein früheres Fischerdorf welches inzwischen ausschliesslich vom Tourismus lebt. Direkt hinter der Stadt fängt die Sahara an. Die Hotels sind meistens südlich des Zentrums bis 25km entfernt. Der Tauchbetrieb wird mit grossen Tagesbooten mit je etwa 25 Tauchern an Bord geregelt. Die Tauchplätze sind durchaus interessant, jedoch sind an jedem Tauchplatz oft mehrere Boote, so das man bald die Orientierung verliert. Die Händler in Hurghada werden inzwischen genauso frech wie die Türken, die Belästigungen sind schon störend.

Hurghada is a former fisherman village which lives now only from the tourism. Direct behind the city begins the Sahara desert. The hotels are mostly south of the center up to a distance of 25km. The diving will be performed with big daily boats which carry about 25 divers on board. The dive spots are usually interesting, but mostly are more then one boat on the dive site and the divers soon loose the orientation. The street sellers in Hurghade are becoming similar impertinent like the Turkish one, the bothering is already disturbing.

Safaga ist ein stilles Dorf mit Einheimischen, als Tourist ist man da verloren. Einige Hotels sind etwas nördlich mit eigener Infrastruktur angesiedelt. Wenn man aus der Anlage raus will geht man nach Hurghada, das etwa 35km nördlich liegt. Ansonsten verbringt man die Zeit im Hotel. Die Anlagen sind ziemlich gross und bieten auch Unterhaltung. Salem ist ein schönes Wrack, unbedingt zu empfehlen. Das berühmte Panorama Reef habe ich leider noch nicht betaucht. Die Tauchplätze sind noch nicht so überlaufen wie weiter nördlich.

Safaga is a quiet village with locals, a tourist is lost there. Some hotels are located north with own infrastructure. To come out of the hotel village the tourists can go with a taxi to Hurghada which is about 35 km in the north. The remaining time will be spend in the hotel area. The hotel areas are big sized and offer all including entertainment. The wreck Salem is very nice, absolute recommended. The famous Panorama Reef I have not yet visited. The dive spots in general are not so overcrowded like further north.

Sharm el Sheikh bzw. Naama Bay ist ein ganz lebhafter Touristenort auf dem Sinai und ganz charmant. Urlaub wie man es mag: keine Taxis, einfach raus aus dem Hotel und man ist im Zentrum. Für mich das Beste in Egypt, auch die Tauchplätze sind die besten. Insbesondere Ras Mohammed hat mich mit seinem superklaren Wasser beeindruckt. Die Thistlegorm ist eines der besten Wracks das ich bisher betaucht habe. Auch die Strasse von Tiran mit Ihren Steilwänden hat mich auch beeindruckt und die nahen Spots sind auch nicht ohne.

Sharm el Sheikh respective the Naama Bay is a very lively tourist village on the Sinai and has its own charm. Vacation in perfection: no taxis, just leave the hotel and you are in the center. For me this place is the best in Egypt, and also the dive sites are the best there. Specially Ras Mohammed has impressed me strongly with its clear and deep blue water. Thistlegorm is one of the best wrecks I have ever seen. Also the Street of Tiran with their walls and pelagic was impressive and the clothe spots are also excellent.

Hamata liegt etwa 150km nördlich von der sudanischen Grenze. Noch weiter südlich von Hamata befindet sich das derzeit südlichste Hotel Ägyptens, Lahami Bay Beach Resort. Die angefahrenen Tauchplätze befinden sich an den vorgelagerten Riffen und gehören zu der berühmten Fury Shoal. Mein Gesamteindruck war: wenig Grossfisch, sehr viele Rifffische und wunderschöne Hart- und Weichkorallen bei ausgezeichnetten Sichtweiten. Am vielgelobten Hausriff war ich nur einmal, hatte dabei aber schlechte Sichtweiten.

Hamata is located about 150km north of the border to Sudan. A bit more south from Hamata is located the actual most southern hotel in Egypt, the Lahami Bay Beach Resort. The divespots which are served by the dive provider are mostly on the nearby Reefs and are part of the famous Fury Shoal. Mein personal impresion was: not so much big fish, a lot of usual reef fishes and very beautyful hard and soft coralls with a fantastic underwater visibility. On the famous house reef I was only once and had unfotunatelly bad vis on that day.

Die Armut ist in diesem westafrikanischem Land um den Fluss Gambia riesig, Infrastruktur ist nur in abgeschotteten Hotels vorhanden. Wir haben zweimal selbstorganisierte Ausflüge unternommen. Zuerst nach Georgetown im Landesinneren, wo wir bei 60 grad schmorten wie noch nie. Ein zweites mal haben wir den Tourispot nördlich des Flusses besucht, aus dem angeblich Kunta Kinte aus der TV-Serie Roots stammt. Es darf dabei aber nicht abschrecken, mit Ziegen und Hühnern im Bus oder mit 18 Personen in einem Pickup-PKW zu reisen.

The poorness is monstrous in the west African country which is located on both sides of the river Gambia, infrastructure is only available in the insular hotels. We have done two self managed excursions. At first to Georgetown in the center of the country, where we at 60 dgrs stew as never in our live before. A second time we visited the tourist spot north of the river, where allegedly Kunta Kinte from the TV series Roots is coming from. But it should not discourage one to travel with goats and chickens in a bus or with 18 people in a pick up car.

Gambia ist englischsprachig, das macht die Kommunikation einfacher. Die kleine Stadt an der Öffnung des Gambia Flusses bietet einfach nichts. Als Tourist kann man sich nur in eines der grösseren Hotels südlich der Stadt begeben, die alle direkt am Strand liegen. Es gibt da einen langen und schönen Sandstrand an dem die Kühe spazieren gehen. Die Einheimischen bieten hier hartnäckig ihre Dienste an wie Massage und Lobsteressen. Als Souvenir empfehle ich Holzschnitzereien, insbesondere Holzmasken, die nach langem verhandeln ganz preiswert sind.

The national language in Gambia is englisch, what makes the communication easier. The small town on the mouth of the Gambia river has simply nothing to offer. As a tourist one can only go to one of the bigger hotels south of the town, which are all located right on the beach. There is a long and nice sandy beach with cows walking along. The locals offer here their services like massage and lobster food. As souvenirs I recommend wooden carving, special big masks which are reasonable priced when you negotiate hardly.

Ich konnte den Iraq besuchen noch bevor Bush seine schrecklichen Raketen über diesem Land abgeladen hat. Ich muss feststellen dass ich kein fanatisiertes Land vorgefunden habe sondern ein Land in dem zwar vieles nicht erlaubt war aber mit sehr freundlichen und netten Leuten und mit viel Spass. Das Essen war hervorragend und die historischen Stätten wie Babylon sind perfekt restauriert und warten schon auf Touristen. In Karballa konnten wir die Moschee, eine der heiligsten islamischen Stätten, besuchen und auch fotografieren.

I could visit Iraq before Bush loaded down his horrible rockets over this country. I have to state that I have not found a fanatic country. Instead of this I found a country where many things was not permitted but equipped with very friendly and nice people and a lot of fun. The food was excellent and the historical sites like Babylon are perfect restaurated and waiting for the tourists. In Karbala we had the pleasure to visit and take pictures from a mosque, one of the most holy places in the Islamic religion.

Von den sagenhaften Geschichten aus 1001 Nacht ist heute in dieser Stadt nichts mehr zu sehen. Nach der jahrzehntelangen Isolation dieses Landes überwiegen Baustellen das Bild dieser Stadt. Und an jeder Strassenecke ein Bild des Diktators. Oft wurde ich in der Stadt aufgefordert keine Fotos zu machen, da zum Beispiel jede Brücke als militärisch eingestuft wird. Die Stadt hat nicht viele Hochhäuser und zieht sich sehr weitläufig hin. Ich habe eigentlich überall nur freundliche Leute kennen gelernt, die auch sehr gastfreundlich waren.

From the fabulous tales from 1001 nights is today not much to see in this city. After this country had many decades of isolation there are mostly seen construction sites in this capitol. And on each corner is placed a picture of the dictator. I was often asked not to take a picture because for example each bridge is considered to be a military object. The city has not much towers and is placed in a spacious area. I have seen and met everywhere very friendly people which was all times very hospitably.

Eines der berühmtesten Kulturgüter dieser Erde, unbeachtet und vereinsamt. Die Archäologen haben Ihren Job getan und die Ausgrabungsstätte steht gut restauriert da. Nur sind in den letzten 20 Jahren keine Besucher gekommen, wie man auch an dem nebenstehenden Bild gut erkennen kann. Zu sehen gibt es Tierbilder auf Wandreliefs in Lebensgrösse und den berühmten Löwen von Babylon. Die Festungsmauern sind vollständig restauriert und auch der Irrgarten wurde wiederhergestellt. Den berühmten Babylonischen Turm konnte ich nicht sehen.

One of the most famous cultural assets of this earth, on my visit unnoted and desolated. The archaeologist has done their job and the archeological excavation is nice restored. But in the last 20 years was no visitors here, like exactly seen in the picture beside. it could be seen pictures of animals on wall relief's in live size and the fabulous lion of Babylon. The walls are complete restored and also the labyrinth is reestablished. Only the famous tower of Babylon who reach up to the sky I could not see anywhere.

In Karbala steht eines der berühmtesten Heiligtümer des Islam, wie mir von Einheimischen erklärt wurde. Pilgerreisende aus dem Iran kommen rüber um in der Moschee zu beten. Diese sind dann auch immer traditionell in schwarz gekleidet. Wir konnten den Innenhof besuchen, in die Moschee selbst durften wir nicht rein. Nachdem wir am Freitag, also dem Sonntag des Islam da waren, konnten wir denn Hochbetrieb und auch die Gebetsstunde am Mittag erleben. Zu dieser Zeit gab es noch keinen Tourismus im Lande.

In Karbala is one of the most celebrated Muslim sanctuaries, like explained to me by locals. Pilgrims from Iran are coming over to pray in the mosque. They are all dressed in the traditional black. We have visited the inner courtyard but in the mosque themselves it was not allowed for us to enter. Due we was there on a Friday, which is the Sunday in the Islam calendar there was intense activity and we joined also the prayers at noon. At the time of our visit there was absolute no tourism in this country.

Jordanien war in der Saddam Hussein Ära das einzige Land, von dem man in den Iraq reisen konnten. In einer Baracke konnte man den Reisepass mit Einladungsschreiben abgeben und erhielt kurz danach ein Visum. Mit der Jordanischen Airline ging es dann nach Bagdad, das Handy und Notebook mussten in Jordan bleiben. Nach der Rückkehr von Bagdad machten wir am Flughafen die unangenehme Erfahrung, das unser Gepäck in Bagdad geblieben ist. So kamen wir ohne Gepäck, jedoch unser guter Agent schaffte es dieses nachzusenden.

Jordan was in the Saddam Hussein era the only country where one could get a visa for the trip to Iraq. In a provisional wooden house one could leave the passport with an invitation letter and received short time later the visa. With the jordanien airline we went to Bagdad, the notebook and mobil phone have to stay in Jordan. After the return from Bagdad we made on the airport the not nice experience, that our luggage is still in Bagdad. So we retourned home without luggage, but our good agent reached it to send it afterwards to us.

Nach Ankunft gegen zwei Uhr morgens eine Übernachtung, am nächsten Morgen ein Visum besorgt und am Nachmittag nach Bagdad geflogen. Auf dem Rückweg hatte ich am Abend mehrere Stunden Zeit um Amman zu besichtigen, bevor um 3 Uhr morgens mein Flieger wieder nach Frankfurt flog. Shopping war bescheiden und in lokalen Gaststätten war auch nicht viel los. So habe ich die letzten Stunden in einer Hotelbar mit ein paar Bier ausklingen lassen und habe den Einheimischen bei Ihren Nachtleben zugeschaut.

After arrival at two o'clock in the morning one overnight stay, next morning catch up the visa at the provisional embassy of Iraq and in the afternoon the flight to Baghdad. On the way back I had a couple of hours time, to visit Amman, before at three o'clock in the morning my plane was leaving for Frankfurt. The shopping was moderate and in the local restaurants nothing happens. So I spend the last hours in a hotel bar with a couple of beers and watched the locals performing their nightlive activities.

Im Sultanat Oman sollte es auch ganz gutes Tauchen geben. Zumindest schliesse ich es aus meinen Erfahrungen in den Emiraten an den angrenzenden Abschnitten an der Ostküste wie auch an der unbewohnten Halbinsel nördlich von Dibba gesehen. Ausserdem werden viele Tauchreisen in deutschen Magazinen angeboten. Leider konnte ich das noch nicht selbst kennen lernen, jedoch steht schon hoch auf meiner Liste. Meine Oman Erfahrung bezieht sich bisher nur auf eine kurze Durchfahrt durch Al Buraimi in der Wüste.

There should be some fantastic diving in the Sultanate Oman. At least I conclude this from my diving experience on the bordering areas on the east coast of the Emirates and also seen on the uninhabited half island north of Dibba. Also there is a lot of promotions in the german dive magazines with package tours. Unfortunately I could not yet seen this, but the destination is already on my list. My only Oman experience is up to now a short drive through the dessert passing the small town Al Buraimi on our Al Ain excursion in the Emirates.

In der Wüste von Abu Dhabi bei Al Ain befindet sich Al Buraimi, eine spezielle Zone, die zwar politisch zu Oman gehört aber passmässig wie Emirates behandelt wird. Die Grenzkontrolle zum Oman findet erst 50 km weiter im Landesinneren statt. Eine Durchgangsstrasse Richtung Dubai führt an einem nicht besonders aufmerksamen Polizeiposten durch den kleinen Ort Al Buraimi und nach 10 min ist man wieder in den Emirates, ohne einen Fuss auf den Boden gesetzt zu haben. Ausser einigen Shops und Kamelhändlern ist mir nichts aufgefallen.

In the dessert of Abu Dhabi close to Al Ain is the village Al Buraimi which is a special zone which politically belongs to Oman but passport vice it is handled like Emirates. The real border check point is 50 km further inside the country. A main road direction to Dubai leads on a not very busy police control station through the small town Al Buraimi and after 10 min one is back again in the Emirates, without setting a footstep on the ground. Except of some shops and camel dealers I have not seen anything exciting.

Das Königreich Saudi Arabien gilt als eines der reichsten Länder dieser Erde aufgrund des reichlichen Ölvorkommens. Ich konnte leider nur Riyadh, die Hauptstadt mitten in der Wüste besuchen. Die interessanten Küstengebiete mit guten Tauchspots am Roten Meer und auch am Golf von Persien waren mir nicht gegönnt. Da Visas nicht so einfach ausgestellt werden, werde ich das Vergnügen wohl auch nicht so schnell erhalten. Aber ein Land in dem Frauen immer den Schleier tragen und es nicht einmal Bier gibt, kann auch anöden.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is respected as one of the most richest countries on this earth because of his abundant oil fields. I could unfortunately visit only Riyadh, the capitol in middle of the desert. The more interesting coastal areas with excellent dive spots on the red sea and also on the Gulf of Persia was not allowed for me. Due it is not so easy to get a visa I believe another possibility will not appear so far. However, a country where all woman has to carrie curtains and no beer available could be as well boring.

Riyadh ist eine hochmoderne Stadt mit vielen Hochhäusern, neuen Ministerien und nagelneuen Strassen. Man sieht sofort, das in diesem Land Geld im Überfluss vorhanden ist. Die Frage ist nur wie lang. Mitten in der Wüste aufgebaut ist es eine beachtliche Leistung, das ganze Wasser für die Stadtbevölkerung zu produzieren. Ganz frei kann man sich nicht bewegen, es wurde davon abgeraten in viele einheimischen Stadtteile zu gehen. So konnte ich an meinem letzten Tag noch eine Stadtrundfahrt durch das Zentrum machen.

Riyadh is a modern city with many high towers, new buildings of government departments and brand new roads. You can see immediately that plenty of money is available in this country. The question is only how long it remains. Build up in the middle of the desert it is a respectable performance just to produce the water for the whole city population. You can't move just individual around and it was not recommended to enter the pure local villages. On my last day I had the pleasure to perform a city tour and drink a coffee at McDonalds.

Mitten in der Wüste etwa 100 km südlich von Riyadh liegt die grösste zusammenhängende Farm dieser Erde. Unglaublich das man für den Aufbau einer Farm einen Ort mitten in der Wüste wählt, ist jedoch nicht die einzige Farm. Das zum Betrieb erforderliche Wasser wird herangefahren, genauso wie alle anderen nötiges Material und Resourcen. Zu meiner Überraschung ist die Farm auch noch hoch automatisiert, man findet modernste Produktionsanlagen mitten in der Wüste. Aber das scheint der Lauf der heutigen Zeit zu sein.

In the middle of the desert about 100km south of Riyadh is located the biggest farm of the earth. Unbelievable that for the location of such a farm is an area in middle of the dessert choose, and it is not the only one. The water necessary to run the farm will be transported from anywhere, exactly as all other needs to run the farm like material and resources. For my surprise the farm is highly automated, there are the High Tec production facilities in the middle of the dessert. But it looks like this is the state of today's generation.

Jubail is eine Industriestadt im Arabischen Golf in der Nähe von Kuweit. Da es keine passenden internationale Flüge gab sind wir über Bahrein und die Brücke zum Festland angekommen. Überraschend war das Wetter im Januar ziemlich kalt, so etwa 10 grd nachts. Das beeindruckendeste für mich war der riessige Bezirk industrieller Fabriken entlang der Autobahn. Das Hotel erfüllt den üblichen westlichen Standard, den davorliegenden Strand habe ich leider nicht erlebt. Wie üblich habe ich nur das Hotel, Kunden und die Autobahn in der Nacht gesehen.

Jubail is an industrial city in the Arabian Gulf area close to Kuwait. Due lack of suitable international flights we reached this town via Bahrain, using the long bridge to mainland. Surprisingly in January the weather was quit cold, about 10dgrs C in the night. The most impressive for me was the giant area filled with industrial factories along the highway. The hotel fulfills all usual western standards, only the beach which is attached I have not seen. As usual on business trips I have seen only the hotel, customers place and the highway by night.

In Senegal haben wir nur wenige Stunden verbracht, zweimal als Zwischenlandung auf dem Flug nach Gambia und auf einem Ausflug über die grüne Grenze von Gambia aus. Senegal ist französisch sprachig und von daher schon gegenüber Gambia schwieriger zu bereisen. Das Land hat eine hohe Armut und so darf man sich nicht wundern, wenn die Bauern zum Broterwerb sogar Rauschgiftpflanzen anbauen und verarbeiten. So eine Produktion haben wir kurz hinter der Grenze gesehen. Die Kinder laufen den westlichen Touristen hinterher und betteln.

In Senegal we spend two times just a couple of hours as a stop over on the flight to Gambia and on a sight seeing trip over the green border from Gambia. Senegal is French speaking and therefore more difficult for travels. The country has a high poorness and so nobody should wonder, when the countrymen to earn their food cultivate and process drug fields. Such a production everybody can see just a short way behind the border. The children on the streets run behind each western tourists and beg for money.

Die Inselgruppe im indischen Ozean wird als das Urlaubsland schechthin gepriessen. Für mich ist es eines der wenigen Länder, zu dem mich nichts mehr hinzieht. Die Landschaft ist wirklich absolute spitze mit den tropischen Wäldern und Hügeln, sowie den wunderschönen Felsen an den Stränden. Unterwasser wird dafür nicht viel geboten. Das Entscheidende ist aber das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis, das völlig inakzeptabel war. Fairer weise muss ich ergänzen, das ich den Fehler machte an Weihnachten hinzufahren.

The island group in the Indian ocean is much lauded as the holiday spot par excellence. For me this is one of the less countries where I am not interested to travel again. The land shape is really absolute excellent with the tropical jungles and hills, as the wonderful famous rocks on the beaches. Underwater is in exchange not much offered. The bottom line is the price performance relation, which is absolute not acceptable. To be fair I have to mention, that I made the mistake to travel there in Christmas holiday time.

Von den Inseln auf den Seychellen wohl der sehenswürdigste Platz. Hier sind die meisten Steinformationen wie sie auf den Postkarten dargestellt werden. Wir sind von Praslin nach La Digue an einem Tagestrip mit dem Boot rübergefahren, dauert etwa eine Stunde. An der Südostseite folgt Bucht an Bucht mit den Felssteinen im Hintergrund. Um in den Südosten zu kommen, sollte man einen lokalen Bus nehmen, da der Fussweg ziemlich weit ist. Alternativ gibt es Fahrräder zu mieten. Tauchen ist möglich, ich hatte nicht das Vergnügen.

From all the islands on the Seychelles this is the most worth seeing place. Here are most of the rock formations like pictured on the post cards. We traveled from Praslin to La Digue on a daytrip basis with a regular ferry boat, is takes about one hour. On the south east side follows one bay after the next with the rock formations in the back ground. To come to this south east corner it is recommended to take a local bus, because the walking track is quite long. Alternative there are rentals for bicycles. Diving is also possible, but I had not the pleasure.

Mahe ist die grösste Insel der Seychellen mit der alten kolonialen Hauptstadt Victoria und dem Flughafen. Der Flair der alten Zeit weht insbesondere an dem Marktplatz mit der Uhr und den umgebenden Gebäuden. In englischen Restaurants gibt es Fisch & Chips und englisches Bier. Mir ist noch eine alte Kirche im Gedächniss und einige Einheimische die heftig getrunken haben, da wir gerade an einem lokalen Feiertag abgereist sind. Ausserdem kam ein richtiger tropischer Regen herunter, bei dem in kürzester Zeit die Strasse unter Wasser stand.

Mahe is the biggest island of the Seychelles with the old colonial Capitol Victoria and the airport. The flair of the old time stream especially on the market square with the clock and the surrounding buildings. In the English restaurants are fish & chips and English beer available. I can also remember a old church and some locals on the road which drunk a lot maybe due a public holiday when we departed. Additional there came a heavy rainfall down and within shortest time the whole roads in the city was under water.

Praslin ist die zweitgrösste Insel, von Mahe kommt man mit einem Flieger hin. Die UW-Sichtweite war miserabel, Wasser bei 25 grad und wenig Fische noch dazu. Eine Sprungschicht bei 10m hat das Vergnügen weiter getrübt. Dazu ein Guide der die Tauchplätze nicht fand und ein Tauchshop dem es wichtiger war mit Freunden des Hauses zum Island Hopping zu fahren, oder Sonn- und Feiertage zu feiern. So wenig habe ich gezwungenermassen noch nie getaucht. Statt Tauchen habe ich dann Radtouren Berg rauf und runter gemacht.

Praslin is the second biggest island, from Mahe is a short flight with a small plane recommended. The underwater visibility was horrible, the water temperature was only 25 dgs and less fish to see. A thermo cline at about 10m hat lowered the pleasure additionally. Together with a guide who did not found the dive spots and a dive shop who found it more important to go with friends of the house for island hopping or celebrate Sunday or public holiday. I never was forced to dive so little. Instead of diving I have done bicycle tours up and down the hills.

Dieses Land an der Südspitze Afrikas hat immer noch zwei Gesichter, ein weises und ein schwarzes. Es wird wohl noch einige Zeit dauern, bis die Folgen der Appartheid verschwinden. Wir haben uns beim Reisen relativ sicher gefühlt, jedoch denke ich das erhöhte Vorsicht in diesem Lande durchaus angebracht ist, insbesondere in den Städten. Landschaftlich ist es eines der schönsten Länder dieser Erde. Bei unserer Reise sind wir von Kapstadt bis zur Grenze von Mosambique gekommen und haben viele grüne Hügel and schöne Strände gesehen.

This country on the south tip of Africa has still two faces, one black and one white. It will take some more time up to the results of the apartheid politic will disappear. On our travel we feel comfortable and safe, but I believe that a higher attention in this country is recommended, especially in the cities. The landscape of South Africa is one of the nicest on this earth. On our trip we visited all the coastline from Cape Town up to the border of Mozambique and we have seen many green Hills and nice beaches.

Die Lage der Stadt und Ihre Umgebung ist einmalig schön. Umrahmt von den Tafelbergen liegt die Stadt direkt am Meer und hat ausserhalb der Hafengegend auch Sandstrände zu bieten. Tagsüber sollte man unbedingt einen Ausflug auf die Tafelberge machen, das 2 Oceans Aquarium besuchen oder Shopping gehen. Abends trifft sich die Gesellschaft im Hafen in einem vielen Restaurants, zum Nightlive geht man dann in die Long Street wo die Cocktails sehr günstig sind. Das Wetter dürfte etwa dem im europäischen Süden entsprechen.

The location of the city and the surroundings are very unique. Framed by the table mountains is the city placed directly on the sea and outside of the harbor area there are also sandy beaches available. In the day time is an excursion on the table mountains necessarily, additional a visit to the 2 oceans aquarium or shopping. In the evening meets the community in the harbor in one of the many restaurants, for nightlife continues then in the Long Street, where the cocktails are inexpensive. The weather looks like in the European south.

In der berühmten Gansbaai haben wir einen Stopover gemacht um den berühmten Weissen Hai zu sehen. Ein Tagesausflug war schnell organisiert und dann ging es schon auf See. Den Weissen habe ich zwar kurz gesehen, aber nur an der Oberfläche. Dann verschwand er so schnell wie er gekommen ist. Ich habe nicht mal die Zeit gefunden in den Käfig zu steigen. So bleibt mir ein Bild wie nebenstehend auch weiterhin versagt. Ausser dem heftigen Wellengang und Spesen nichts gewesen, einen weiteren Trip werde ich wohl nicht mehr machen.

In the very famous Gansbaai we made a stopover to visit the great white shark. A daytrip was easy arranged and then we already started into the sea in the morning. I have seen the great white shark shortly, but only on the surface. He disappeared so fast as he arrived at the boat. I had not at all the time to enter the cage. Therefore such a picture like aside will not be from me for this time. Beside heavy waves and expenses was not much and so I don't believe that I will make such a trip once more.

Margate liegt am südlichen Ende von Kwazulu Natal und ist ein bekannter Badeort für Einheimische. Ein grosser Sandstrand mit touristischer Infrastruktur und ein beachtliches Nachtleben zeichnen diesen Ort aus. Die Unterwasserlandschaft ist langweilig, jedoch die grosse Attraktion hier sind die Haie, inbesondere die Sambesi Bullenhaie. Ich hatte das Vergnügen bei jedem Tauchgang diesen bulligen Haien zu begegnen. Je kleiner die Tauchgruppe, umso näher kommen sie. Als ich mal allein im Wasser war, kam einer bis auf 2m ran.

Margate is located on the south corner of Kwazulu Natal and is a famous bathing resort for the locals. A big sandy beach with touristy infrastructure and a remarkable night live mark this village. The underwater landscape is boring in this area, but the big attraction here are the sharks, special the Zambezi Bull Sharks. I had the pleasure to meet this brawny sharks on every dive I made. Each smaller the diving group is, as closer they will come. When I was once alone in the water, there come one up to two meters to me.

Die kleine Ortschaft Umkomaas liegt etwa 20km südlich der Kwazulu Metropole Durban. Das Tauchgebiet hier ist die Aliwal Shoel, welches vorgelagerte Riffe sind. Die Unterwasserwelt ist bereits interessanter als weiter südlich, aber immer noch nicht viel los. Berühmt sind die Riffe für die Sandtigerhaie, die hier zu bestimmten Zeiten in grossen Mengen anzutreffen sind. Leider war ich zum falschen Zeitpunkt da. Von Umkomaas kann man einen Ausflug nach Durban und in Naturparks machen, in denen auch einheimische Tanzvorführungen gezeigt werden.

The small village Umkomaas is about 20km south of Durban, the metropolis of Kwazulu Natal. The diving area here is the Aliwal Shoal, which are off shore reefs. The underwater world is already more interesting then further south, but still not excellent. Famous are this reefs for ragged tooth sharks, which are in the season in big schools seen. Unfortunately I was there at the wrong time. From Umkommas it is easy to reach Durban and some natural preserves, where also local dance shows are presented.

Die Sodwana Bay liegt etwa 200km nördlich von Durban mitten im Urwald. Hier liegen die besten Tauchplätze von Südafrika. Man findet bereits Corallen und viele tropische Fische. Die Tauchgebiete sind nach der Entfernung in Meilen von der Anlagestelle benannt, wobei mit der Entfernung auch die Klasse der Tauchplätze steigt. Es gibt einige Tauchshops und insbesondere am Wochenende und in Ferien wird es ziemlich voll. Sofern man sich nicht für die einfachen Unterkünfte in der Nähe der Anlegestelle entscheidet, benötigt man ein Auto.

The Sodwana Bay is located about 200km north of Durban in the middle of the jungle. Here are the best dive spots of South Africa. Corals and many tropical fish is already available. The diving areas are named after the distance in miles from the entering point, and each with the distance the quality of the dive spots grow. There are some dive shops and special on the weekends and in the vacation time the resorts are getting full. If you don't decide to stay in the simple cottages close to the entering point then you need a car to go around.

In dieser Stadt haben wir selbst die Fenster im Auto geschlossen und fühlten uns nicht ganz wohl. Die Stadt sollte einmal eine schöne Kolonialstadt gewesen sein, wie die Gebäude noch zeigen. Inzwischen ist die weisse Bevölkerung komplett ausgezogen und die Stadt wird nur von Farbigen bewohnt. Das Zentrum ist ziemlich vergammelt und überall liegen die Abfälle auf den Strassen und die Fensterscheiben sind eingeschlagen. In den neu entstandenen Satellitenstädten kann man dagegen weiterhin shoppen und spazieren gehen.

In this city we have closed the windows in the cars, did not stop and had a not nice feeling. This town was once a nice beautiful city as the remaining buildings still shows. But in between the white population has complete moved out of town and the city is only occupied by colored people. The center rather goes to seed and everywhere lies about garbage on the roads and the window glass is stamped. In the new build satellite cities where the white population moved to, everybody can walk around and shop without trouble.

In Tunesien war ich bisher zweimal, 1985 auf dem Festland und dann 1989 auf Djerba. Beides mal hatte ich das zweifelhafte Vergnügen mir den Magen zu verderben und habe tagelang das Klo besetzt. Irgendwie bekommt mir das Essen dort nicht. Ich empfehle keinem eine Djerba-Rundreise zu machen bei der man bei jedem Stop erstmal verzweifelt das nächste Plumpsklo sucht. Beim ersten Besuch habe ich den Surfschein gemacht und einen Tagesausflug nach Tunis. Das zweite mal haben wir einen interessanten 3 Tagesausflug in die Sahara durchgeführt.

In Tunisia I was two times up to now, 1985 on the main land and 1989 on Djerba. Both times I had the dubious pleasure to spoil my stomach and occupied days long the toilet. Anyhow I don't accept the food there. I don't recommend to anybody to join a Djerba sightseeing tour where you on each stop at first distressed looks for the next oriental shithouse. On my first trip I performed a surfing and a tennis course as well as a daytrip to Tunis. The second time we made an interesting three day trip into the desert Sahara.

Auf einem Tagesausflug von Monastir mit gemietetem Taxi haben wir auch die Hauptstadt erkundet. Bereits die Fahrt über die Autobahn mit afrikanischen Regeln ist abenteuerlich. Ein Spaziergang durch die Soukhs mit den orientalischen Gerüchen ist absolut zu empfehlen. Man sollte auch auf den Turm einer Moschee steigen und dem Treiben in dieser Stadt von oben zusehen. Weiterhin ist in der Nähe auch die ganz interessante Ausgrabungsstätte des antiken Karthago, von dem Hannibal zu seinem Eroberungszug nach Europa startete.

On a day trip from Monastir with a rented taxi we have explored the capitol. Already the journey over the highway with the African rules was really very adventurous. The walk through the soukhs with all the oriental smells and crying sellers from all sides is absolute recommended. Another good option is to climb up a tower of one of the mosques and look for the rush in the streets. Additional it is nearby the archeological excavation of the ancient Cartago, from where Hannibal started his conqueror journey to Europe.

Dieses war mein erster aussereuropäischer Aufenthalt. Hier dürfte es auch keine guten Tauchgründe geben aufgrund des sehr gutes Sandstrandes. So habe ich mich mit Fussbalspielen Tennis und Surfen vergnügt. Den Surfschein habe ich aber für die Katz gemacht, da ich heute nicht einmal mehr weiss, wie man auf dem Brett steht. In der nahegelegen Stadt kann man auf dem Markt feilschen. Ist bei der Hitze aber eine ganz schöne Plage. Wie ich mitbekommen habe, gibt es im Meer viele Feuerquallen, einige haben Verbrennungen gehabt.

This was my first oversea destination. I assume that here are also no good dive areas because of the very good sandy beaches. So I have focused myself to football, tennis and surfing. The surfing course I made for nothing, because today I don't know how to stand on the board. In the nearby city is the market another possibility to spend time and money. But this could be as well a plague in the very strong sun of Africa. As I have seen there are a lot of fire corals in the sea, some tourists get heavy burned from them.

Djerba ist ein reines Tourizentrum, die ganze Küste entlang reiht sich ein Hotel an das nächste. Die Hotelanlagen sind meistens all inclusive, die langen Sandstrände sind ausgezeichnet. Einige kleinere Dörfer leben auch stark von der Touribranche, die Leute wundern sich aber noch wenn sich eine Frau in ein Kaffeehaus setzt. Zum Tauchen gibt es hier aufgrund des Sandstrandes nicht viel und so beschränkt sich der Aufenthalt auf Faulenzen am Strand und vielleicht noch einen Wüstentrip. Im Sommer brennt die Sonne gnadenlos.

Djerba is a pure center of tourism, the whole cost line is occupied by one hotel after the next. The hotel establishment are mostly all inclusive, the endless sandy beaches are excellent. Some smaller villages lives from the tourism, but the man still wonder when a woman enter a coffee shop and take a seat. For diving is not much here due of the sandy beach and so the stay is limited to be lazy on the beach and eventually to a ride through the desert. In the summer the sun is burning without mercy.

Die grösste Wüste dieser Erde. Wir sind von Djerba aus 3 Tage mit dem Jeep und einigen Franzosen durch die Randgebiete der Wüste gezogen. Es ist erstaunlich wie schön es da in der Nacht abkühlt, nachdem tagsüber eine teilweise unerträgliche Hitze vorherrscht. Ich kann mir kaum vorstellen, das es Menschen gibt die die Strapazen einer Durchquerung auf sich nehmen. Sehr beeindruckend waren auch die Salzseen mit dem stark versalzenem Wasser. Den Gegensatz bilden die Oasen und auch eine Fata Morgana konnten wir erleben.

The biggest desert on the earth. Starting from Djerba we traveled around with a jeep and some Frenchman through the edging corners of the desert. It is absolute surprising how cold it will get in the night, after within the day there is mostly a intolerable heat. I can't believe it that there are humans which takes the exertions to walk across over hundred of kilometers. Very impressive was for me also the salt seas with their very salty water. The opposite to this are the oases and also a Fata Morgana we could experience on this trip.

Ich habe etwas gerätselt, wo ich die Türkei zuordnen soll, dann habe ich sie zuletzt dem Mittlerem Osten zugeordnet. Im Gegensatz zu einigen deutschen Politikern sehe ich dieses Land eher da als in Europa. Ist inzwischen wohl mit das Urlaubsland der Deutschen und der Pauschaltourismus blüht. Es kann im Sommer ganz schön heiss werden und das kann ohne Klimaanlage anstrengend sein. Leider sind die Verkäufer inzwischen so aufdringlich und unverschämt, das man gar nicht mehr das Hotel verlassen möchte.

I have puzzled for a time where to allocate Turkey, then I have finally added them to the middle east region. In opposite to some European politician I see the country more there as a part of Europe. In between this country is the holiday spot of the Germans and the all inclusive package tourism prosper. In the summer time it could get really hot in this country and this could be adventurous without an aircon. Unfortunately the street sellers are so pushing and impertinent that you don't like to leave the hotel area anymore.

Am meisten hat mich verblüfft, das in der ganzen Stadt nur ganz wenige Frauen mit Schleier herumlaufen. Die Stadt macht einen ganz modernen, westlich orientiereten Eindruck und man könnte meinen irgendwo in Südeuropa zu sein. Ganz anders als zum Beispiel Istanbul, in die orientalische Lebensweise überall zu sehen ist. Durch die Lage im Hügelland bietet die Stadt keine touristischen Attraktionen.

In the capitol of Turkey I was only once on business trip and as usual on such trips I have only seen the airport, hotel and the customers. At most surprised me that in the whole city only some less women are carrying the curtains. The city impressed me with his modern and western oriented engagement and everybody could think that he is somewhere in south Europe. Totally different as for example Istanbul, where on each corner the oriental pattern of live could be seen. Because of its location in the hills the city has no special touristy attractions.

Ein Klassiker unter den Städten, insbesondere wenn man Geschichte mag. Diese Stadt mit den wechselnden Namen hat im Mittelalter einen starken Einfluss auf die europäische Geschichte gehabt, im Römischen Reich genauso wie später im Osmanischen. Aus der islamischen Glanzzeit sind einige der schönsten Moscheen in die heutige Zeit erhalten geblieben und bilden eine grandiose Kullise. Einmalig ist das diese Stadt sich über zwei Kontinente hinzieht, eine gewaltige Brücke über den Bosporus verbindet hier Asien mit Europa.

The classic under the cities, especially if somebody likes the history. This city with the changing names has in the middle ages a strong influence on the European history, especially in the Romanian as well as later in the Osmanian empire. From the Islamic high days are some of the nicest mosques conservated into today's time and build up a very picturesque scenery. Very unique is that this city is located on two continents, a massive bridge over the Bosporus connect here Asia with Europe.

Die Salzterrassen von Pamukkale sind wirklich ein Naturwunder und unbedingt sehenswert. Über einen grossen Hang fliesst das Wasser über Salzkaskaden abwärts und bildet überall Becken, in denen das Wasser ziemlich aufgeheizt stehen bleibt. Den Besuchern wird dabei Gelegenheit gegeben darin zu planschen. Als wir die Terrassen besuchten standen oben noch die Hotels am Hang und wir übernachteten darin. Inzwischen sind diese aus Naturschutzgründen richtigerweise abgerissen. Die Fahrt durch das Hügelland ist auch recht interessant.

The salt terraces from Pamukkale are really a miracle of our nature and absolute worth to be visited. Over a big inclination flows the salty water about cascades down and build everywhere bowls, where the heated water will be impounded. The visitors gets the possibility to splash in the water. When we visited the terraces on top of the hill was build up some hotels and we spended our nights there. In between they are dismantled what is correct due of nature conservation. The journey through the hills is also very interesting.

Dieses ist eine sehr typische Touristenhochburg der Türkei. Die Anfahrt erfolgt über den Flughafen Antalya. An den Stränden erstreckt sich eine Hotelburg neben der anderen. Die Strände erstrecken sich endlos weit in beide Richtungen. Das Wasser im Uferbereich is sehr flach und warm und ideal für Familien mit Kindern. Geboten wird Strandleben mit allen Wassersportarten und Ausflüge in die Umgebung. Tauchen muss eher bescheiden sein. Shopping kann Frau ganz gut im benachbarten Manavgat, in Side waren bereits vor Jahren die Verkäufer unausstehlich.

This is a very typical tourist center in the turkey. The area could be reached via the airport of Antalya. On the beaches is one hotel castle after the next. The beaches stretches endless in bother directions. The water in the shore area is flat and warm and ideal for families with kids. On the beach are offered all usual sport activities and short trips in the nearby surroundings. Diving should be not very nice due the sand beaches create bad vis. For shopping the close Manavgat is the best place, in Side already years ago the sellers was intolerably.

Die berühmteste Stadt aus der griechischen Antike, die 20 Jahre belagert wurde, bevor Sie mit einem trojanischem Pferd erobert wurde. Verbunden mit so berühmten Namen wie Achilles, Odysseus, Agamemnon und der schönen Helena war es der Treffpunkt in der Antike. Als leidenschaftlicher Interessent für musste ich die Ausgrabungsstätte natürlich besuchen, bei der die Türken touristenwirksam einen Nachbau des hölzernen Pferdes aufgestellt haben. In der Ausgrabungsstätte selbst sieht man nicht viel, eigentlich nichts.

The most famous city from the Greek ancient world, which was beleaguered for about 20 years before it was conquered with the help of the Trojan horse. Connected to the famous names like Achilles, Odysseus, Agamemnon and the beautiful Helena was it the meeting point in the ancient era. As a impassionate friend of this culture I had to visit this archeological excavation, where the Turkish for the tourists build up a remake of this wooden horse. In the archeological excavation themselves is not much to see, or better nothing to see except some holes.

Nachdem in Bodrum die meisten Touris Türken sind, unterscheidet sich diese Stadt angenehm von den Orten weiter im Osten. Die übliche Touristenanmache haben wir gar nicht erfahren und das Preisniveau war auch besser. Ansonsten ist der Sandstrand etwas bescheiden und dafür sorgt die felsige Grundlage für sehr gute Sichtweiten unter Wasser. Die Tauchtrips werden mit grösseren Holzbooten durchgeführt und gehen an die vorgelagerten Inseln. Die UW Landschaft ist abwechslungsreich, es gibt jedoch wenig Fisch.

Because the most tourists in this area are locals this city is much more convenient to stay as on the other locations more in the east. The usual tourist bothering we have not experienced and the price level was much better too. Other vice the sandy beaches are moderate and the rocky bottom provides a very good visibility under water. The dive trips are performed with bigger wooden ships and runs to the close offshore islands. The underwater landscape is diversified, but as usual in the Mediterranean see luck of fish.

Die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate sind in den 70'ger Jahren aus 7 Emiraten entstanden. Überall wird gebaut und Dubai zum Beispiel ist eine moderne Metropole die den europäischen Standard nicht scheuen braucht. 20% der Bevölkerung besteht aus Arabern, der Rest sind überwiegend Inder und Pakistani. Berühmt sind die künstliche Palmeninsel und demnächst auch die Earth. Tauchen im Golf ist nicht besonders, anders verhält sich das an der Küste zum Indischen Ozean, wo ganz brauchbare Tauchgründe vorliegen.

The United Arab Emirates emerge in the 70th years from the seven Emirates. Everywhere are construction sites and Dubai for example is a modern metropolis which don't need to shy the European standard. 20% of the population are original Arabs, the others are mostly Indians and Pakistani. Famous are the man made palm island and soon as well the Earth. The diving in the gulf is not outstanding due poor visibility, contrary to the coast line on the Indian ocean in the Emirate Fujairah, where are very interesting dive spots located.

Die Hauptstadt und zugleich mit 90% des Landes auch das grösste Emirat. Hat mit einer arabischen Stadt nicht mehr viel gemeinsam und besteht nur noch aus den mit Petrodollars aufgebauten Towers, mit den kleinen Moscheen dazwischen. Eine derart supermoderne Stadt habe ich noch nicht gesehen. Irgendwie wirkte die Stadt aber auch steril, soweit man dies natürlich von einem 3 stündigen Besuch beurteilen kann. Weiterhin haben wir Al Ain besucht, die Oase mitten in der Wüste an der Grenze zu dem Sultanat Oman.

The capitol and at the same time the biggest emirate with more then 90% of the landscape. The capitol has not much to do with an Arabic city and contains only high towers with some small mosques in between which are build with the dollars from the oil business. Such a hyper modern city I have not yet seen in my live. But the city looks as well sterile, of course as long as I can judge it from my three hours visit. Additional we have visited Al Ain, an oasis in middle of the dessert on the border to the sultanate Oman.

Das kleinste der Emirate, nördlich von Sharjah. Durch die Grösse ist man in wenigen Minuten durch und wenn man nicht aufpasst merkt man es gar nicht. Das Emirat wirkte auf uns sehr sauber und die Strassen waren gut ausgebaut. In einer Tankstelle wurden wir gefragt, woher wir kommen. Als wir uns geoutet haben gab es ein freudiges Grinsen und eine Lobeshymne auf Deutschland. Insgesamt habe ich festgestellt, das in den ganzen Emiraten die Deutschen sehr populär und gern gesehene Gäste sind.

The smallest of the emirates is located directly north of Sharjah. Due of its size you can rush through in a couple of minutes and when you don't care you don't identify it. This emirate looks for us very clean and the roads was in very good conditions. On a petrol station we was asked where we came from and after we outed us there came a bright smile and a nice comment about Germany. Every where in the emirates I had the feeling that the Germans are very popular in this country and gladly welcomed guests.

Dubai Stadt ist eine westliche Metropole die nichts gemeinsam hat mit der orientalischen Vergangenheit. Die Scheichs bauen diesen Ort systematisch zu einem Handelsplatz und Touristenzentrum vergleichbar mit Singapur aus. Ich glaube in wenigen Jahren wird diese Stadt in einem Atemzug mit New York, London und Hong Kong genannt und die Lücke zwischen Europa und Asien füllen. Sehenswert sind das einzige 7 Sterne Hotel dieses Planeten, die Skyline um das World Trade Center und die Gässchen in Bur Dubai.

Dubai city is a western metropolis which has not much common with the oriental history. The governing sheikhs systematically build up this location to a emporium comparable to Singapore. I believe in a couple of years this city will be called in the same breath as New York, London and Hong Kong and close the distance between Europe and Asia. Absolute recommended to visit are Burj al Arab, the only 7star hotel in this world, the skyline around the world trade center and the small alleys in the old town Bur Dubai.

Dibba ist ein kleiner Ort in dem Emirat Fujairah am Indischen Ozean, direkt an der Grenze zu einem Teil von Oman. Etwa 5km südlicher befindet sich in der Hotelanlage Holiday Beach Motel das MaKu Divecenter der Schweizer Kurt und Margrit. Innerhalb von wenigen Minuten wird der nahe gelegene Dippa Rock erreicht, an dem ein toller Korallengarten und viel Fisch anzutreffen sind. Erstmalig konnte ich dort den Brunnenbauer sehen, sowie unzählige Turtles. Wassertemperatur schwankt von 20 bis über 30 grad im Sommer.

Dibba is a small village in the emirate Fujairah on the Indian ocean side, just on the border to the northern part of Oman. About 5km south in the area of the Holiday Beach Motel is located the MaKu Dive center of the Swiss couple Kurt and Margrit. Within a few minutes will be reached the close located Dibba rock, where a nice coral garden and a lot of fish could be seen. First time I could see the fountain builder fish and uncountable turtles. The water temperature range between 20 and 30 dgs in the summer time.

Das nördlichste der Emirate, an der Grenze zum nördlichen Zipfel von Oman. Hier schlagen die Uhren noch wirklich anders, die tiefste Provinz der supermodernen Emirate tut sich hier auf. Von den Towers ganz verschont kann man hier noch die Araber in Ihren Strassenkaffees sitzen sehen als ob es das Boomtown 100km südlich nicht geben würde. Als Westler wird einem hier noch hinterher gesehen, insbesondere wenn man eine Frau ist. Die Strassen machten einen nicht ganz so gepflegten Eindruck, jedoch sehe ich das als normal an.

The most northern emirate on the border to the north part of Oman. The watches beat here really totally different in this back laid province of the hyper modern emirates. Spared from the towers you can see here the Arab mans sitting in their coffee shops and nobody could believe that 100km south is one of the biggest boom towns of this world. The people still looks after western people and especially after woman without a curtain. The roads are in same conditions as more south but that looks for me quite normal.

Fast schon verbunden miteinander befindet sich das konservativste Emirat nördlich vom liberalsten Dubai. Hier ist Alkohol noch verboten und man bekommt es nicht mal in den Hotelanlagen. Bei Landung auf dem internationalen Airport, welcher sich nur 20km nördlich von Dubai befindet, werden strenge Kontrollen durchgeführt. Die konservative Einstellung merkt man auch an den Stränden wo Badekleidung nicht erlaubt ist. Im Stadtbild wechseln sich mehrere wunderschöne Moscheen mit den von Dubai wohlbekannten Towers ab.

Nearby connected together is the most conservative emirate just north of the most liberal Dubai. Here is alcohol still forbidden and you will not get it as well in the touristy hotel zones. At the landing on the international airport of Sharjah, which is just 20km north of Dubai, are strict controls for all alcoholic and other disagreeable issues. The conservative engagement could be also noticed on the beaches, where swimming suits are not allowed. In the city landscape changes nice mosques with the towers which are well known from Dubai.

Nördlich von Ajman befindet sich dieses noch auf Fischfang ausgerichtete Emirat, angepasst an die heutige Zeit ist es die Hochburg von Sportfischern. Mit etwa 35.000 Einwohnern ist es das zweitkleinste Emirat. Umm al Qaiwan bedeutet die Mutter der zwei Mächte, womit auf die Herrschaft über das Wasser und das Land ausgedrückt wird. Zum Besichtigen sind der ruhige alte Hafen und einige alte Festungen zu erwähnen, welche die Altstadt geschützt haben. Man kann mit dem Boot einen Ausflug zu der vorgelagerten Insel Sinaiyah durchführen.

North of Ajman s located this on fishing aligned emirate, adjusted to today's time it is the center of the sport fishing groups in this area. With a population of about 35.000 it is the second smallest emirate. Umm al Qaiwain means mother of two powers, which refers to the dominance over water and land. There could be visited the quite old harbor and some old fortress, which have covered the old town of this fisherman village. By a boat it could be visited the nearby off shore island Sinaiyah.
